Hanakoya Flower Café Penang Laksa Pasta

Pasta

Description

Post by Chiefeater VK

Hanakoya Flower Café Penang was an accidental discovery. Jen and I had planned to eat at one of the other restaurants along Muntri Street in George Town, Penang, but none were open at the time we were there.

Hanakoya occupies a heritage shophouse with a high ceiling, floral arrangements, greenery and a bright, contemporary interior. The cane-backed chairs and patterned floor tiles give the café a pleasant character.

I had imagined Hanakoya to be primarily a dessert café, but it turned out to be much more than that.

The Fusion Penang Laksa Karaage Spaghetti (RM27.90) was an absolute hit with both of us. We loved the full flavours of the laksa-inspired ragù, while the chicken karaage was tender and juicy. The farfalle pasta also worked particularly well, with its folds catching the ragù and making every bite a delight.

We also tried the Steamed Chicken (RM18), which turned out to be something quite different from what its name suggested.

It was actually a coffee cocktail accompanied by a jelly made to resemble steamed chicken. While I wouldn’t say it was something I would order again, I appreciated the clever novelty of the presentation.

Jen ordered a Gooey Honey Orange as her drink.

What began as an unplanned stop turned into a very enjoyable meal, particularly because of that laksa-inspired pasta.
