Sourdough isn’t something I would normally associate with gelato, so it was an interesting discovery when I stopped by Project Gelato on Chulia Street in George Town, Penang, for two scoops.

The Sourdough Gelato is made using sourdough trimmings and unsold bread from local bakeries, giving ingredients that might otherwise go to waste another purpose.
According to Project Gelato, the sourdough contributes a tangy, umami-rich character to the creamy base. I found the concept particularly interesting, although it was the unusual choice of ingredient rather than any specific flavour characteristic that stood out to me.

My second scoop was Vanilla and Olive. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really distinguish the olive component. To me, it simply tasted of vanilla.

Of the two, the sourdough was certainly the more interesting creation.

The use of discarded sourdough trimmings and unsold bread from local bakeries to make gelato is an interesting example of creative food reuse. The Vanilla and Olive flavour was less distinctive than its name suggested.
