Chiefeater Eddie Low was in the Melbourne CBD and decided that an afternoon in the city is not complete without waffles at Max Brenner QV
Nyonya, Asam Laksa, Otak Otak, Pork-Free
I have to say that I had reservations dining at Nyonya Tingkat Signature in Sphere Bangsar South. I had a bad experience dining here several years ago. The food was not well seasoned. But I had heard good things about this place in the last year and I was wondering whether they had gotten someone in to fix their menu. And the people filling up the restaurant would suggest that they have done something right.
I decided to give it a shot. I had lunch there with a friend, WP, who had just returned home from overseas. He was hankering for local food so this sounded like a good option. The outlet was full and every table was filled up. Understandably, the food took a while to arrive. That was alright, as we were busy chatting anyway.
The first item to arrive was the Otak Otak (RM14.90++). I was pleasantly surprised by how flavourful it was. It had a nice spicy taste to the dish but not so much that it dulled all the other flavours. The spicy & smoky flavours coupled with the outer firmness of the Otak-Otak and moist and tender insides make it delectable.
WP said that his Nyonya Asam Laksa (RM14.90++) was better than some he had in Penang, as it was very full flavoured giving him a hearty meal. I think some Penangites might want to lynch him for saying that. But hey, don’t kick it till you try it.
My Meehoon Siam (RM14.90++) was competent. The curry chicken that came with it was well seasoned but I found the meat too mushy. It may have lost points but that Otak Otak really made up for any shortcomings.
Their lunch sets came with a drink which we chose not to take cause we didn't like the option.
