Chiefeater Hedges Liang enjoyed the Hokkien Char at Bayan Baru Market Food Court

Chicken Porridge, Pork-Free
This tricycle stall at the rundown Apollo Food Court along the busy Jalan Raja Uda has been offering its kochabi (traditional-styled) chicken porridge for more than 40 years.
The thick, smooth porridge that has been cooked with chicken parts for hours is served with shredded chicken meat, chopped lean pork and chicken giblets.
A dash of soy sauce, sesame oil, white pepper powder is added. And garnished with finely chopped spring onions, ginger strips and eu char kuih (fried cruller) pieces. It is truly a comfort food indeed!
It is heartening to see the current proprietor, Leang Kok Poh, a young man taking over their family business. He was not even born yet when his uncle started this porridge business at the same spot. His cousin is also selling the same dish in a hawker centre nearby.
If more local young adults are like them, we can rest assured that our local traditional street foods will continue to thrive in Penang.
