Bonchon Sunway Square Korean Fried Chicken

Korean Fried Chicken

Description

Post by Chiefeater VK

There’s a new kid at Sunway Square, and this one comes with quite a history behind its fried chicken. Bonchon Sunway Square is the Korean fried chicken brand’s first Malaysian outlet. Bonchon started in Busan, South Korea in 2002, founded by Jinduk Seo. The name translates to “my hometown”. The brand then made its way to the United States in 2006, opening its first overseas restaurant in Fort Lee, New Jersey, followed by New York City. Two decades later, Bonchon has finally arrived in Malaysia, choosing Sunway Square for its first outlet here.

Naturally, we went for the chicken.

We ordered the Wings & Drumettes, (small 6pcs) with the Spicy sauce. Bonchon is known for hand-battering and double-frying its chicken before brushing it with sauce, and you can see why that technique has travelled so well.

Beneath the spicy coating, the chicken remained moist and juicy. I particularly liked how the sauce didn’t completely overwhelm the chicken itself. There was plenty of flavour and heat while you could still enjoy the meat underneath.

What I also enjoyed, perhaps even more than I expected, were the Fish Cake Fries. They’re thin strands of fish cake fried until crisp, giving you something that’s very easy to keep picking at between pieces of chicken. Served with a creamy dipping sauce, they’re a fun alternative to regular fries and I’d order these again.

The meal came with pickled radish, which was useful for cutting through the richness and spice of the fried chicken.

We also had two House Golden Lime Slushies . Cold and citrusy, they worked particularly well against the spicy chicken.

Bonchon has built its international reputation around Korean fried chicken, so the chicken was always going to be the main attraction. For me, though, those Fish Cake Fries deserve some attention too.

It’s a good start for this new arrival at Sunway Square.

MVX Summary

MVX Score: 8.7/10

M – Meal Value
RM55.33 for six pieces of chicken, Fish Cake Fries and two drinks isn’t bargain territory, but the chicken was moist, the coating delivered plenty of flavour and the Fish Cake Fries added something different to the meal.
Score: 8.4/10

V – Venue
Being inside the new Sunway Square makes Bonchon an easy casual dining option, with the bold red-and-black Korean fried chicken restaurant look giving it plenty of visual character.
Score: 8.6/10

X – X-Factor
Bonchon’s double-fried chicken is what built the brand internationally, and it translates well here. I also really enjoyed the Fish Cake Fries, which give me another reason to return besides the chicken.
