Borenos Asia City Chicken Burger

Back in Kota Kinabalu, and my first meal was somewhere familiar: Borenos Asia City.

I went straight for the Signature Chicken Burger (RM13.50).

It arrived piping hot, which immediately gave it an advantage. The coating around the chicken was still properly crisp, while the thigh meat underneath was tender and juicy. Borenos keeps the burger fairly simple — chicken thigh, lettuce, soft bun and a wee bit of mayo — so there isn’t much to distract you from the fried chicken itself.

And it didn’t need much else.

The seasoning was lovely. Enough savouriness and spice to give the chicken plenty of flavour without burying the taste of the meat. Combined with that crisp exterior and tender chicken, everything I wanted from a fried chicken burger was there.

Hot. Crispy. Tender. Well seasoned.

What more could I ask for?

There was another surprise during this visit.

I noticed on the wall that Borenos now has 10 locations, including three in the Klang Valley (Puchong, Bangi and Damansara Uptown). That’s quite a change for a brand that started serving fried chicken in Sabah in 2015.

I’ve eaten Borenos before, so the quality of the chicken wasn’t exactly a revelation. What impressed me this time was how well something as straightforward as its burger was executed.

And that was all I needed tonight.

The original Asia City outlet is a straightforward fast-food restaurant rather than somewhere you visit for the décor. It is comfortable enough for a quick meal, and being open around the clock certainly adds convenience.
Score: 7.5/10

X – X-Factor
Borenos gets the fundamentals right. The chicken came out hot with a crisp exterior, tender meat and seasoning that worked. For such a simple burger, there wasn’t much I wanted changed.
