Pasembur, Pork-Free
This big hawker centre, Cecil Street Food Court, next to the Cecil Street (7th Street) market is a very popular place to look for local Penang food. Among the rows and rows of food stalls here is this one selling Chinese-styled pasembur.
Chinese-styled pasembur is among the most sought after hawker food in Penang.

It is a dish that consists of shredded mangkuang (jicama) and cucumber, deep fried taukua (bean curd), cucur and keropok (fritters and crackers) and jellyfish.
Deep fried taukua (bean curd), its soft texture balances up the flavour of pasembur.

These deep fried cucur (fritters) add fullness to pasembur.

Thin deep fried keropok (crackers) to give pasembur a firm and crispy taste as well.

Shredded cucumber, mangkuang (jicama) and jellyfish make up the rest of the ingredients of pasembur.

The fresh cucumber and mangkuang arranged on top of the deep fried ingredients before the sauce is poured over them.

The most important component of pasembur is the thick, creamy and sweetish sauce poured over the other ingredients. It determines the deliciousness of the dish. It makes all the difference!

Mr and Mrs Chan, the operators of this well-known pasembur stall.

The pasembur sauce determines the deliciousness of the dish as the other ingredients are quite bland by themselves.

The prices for the various serving sizes of the pasembur.
Small - RM6.00
Medium - RM7.50
Large - RM9.00

Mr Chan, a friendly young man, took over this pasembur business from his father.
