Desserts
After dinner, we weren’t particularly hungry anymore. We simply wanted somewhere quiet to sit, have dessert and wind down before calling it a night. That search led us to Eng Chai Tong Argyll.

Walking in, what struck me first wasn’t the menu. It was the café itself. Warm timber finishes, soft lighting and comfortable seating gave the space a calm, contemporary feel while still respecting the heritage character of the shophouse. It felt more like a modern café than a traditional herbal dessert shop.

I ordered the Peachgum Pear.
Served cold, it came with pear, peach gum, white fungus, red dates and longan in a lightly sweet herbal broth. The flavours were clean and comforting, with just enough sweetness to finish the evening without feeling heavy. The pear remained soft while still holding its shape, and the various ingredients gave the dessert different textures without competing with one another.
It was a good dessert.

What stayed with me more, however, was the environment.
There are cafés where you finish your drink and leave. Then there are cafés where you find yourself lingering because the space simply feels pleasant to be in. Eng Chai Tong Argyll falls into the latter category. Even if I wasn’t craving herbal desserts, I’d happily return just to spend some quiet time there.
