There has been a lot of interest in the re-opening of KBN King’s Beef Noodle since their opening on 1 Mar 2023. Their new opening page on chiefeater received the highest views we have ever seen! After having closed in 2019, there were a lot of fans eager to revisit the taste of yesteryears.
King’s Beef Noodle has its origins in Seremban. Opened almost 60 years ago, both Mr Goh and his father started out with a stall at the Pasar Besar Seremban. In the mid 1970s, Mr Goh ventured to start King’s Beef Noodle at Jalan Dr Krishnan in Seremban’s town centre.
My first encounter with their beef noodle was in the 90s when my wife brought me there. I was hooked from the first time I ate it. The thick flavours of beefy goodness soaked the noodles and each morsel was a delight to bite into. The aroma was so ingrained that it had probably even seeped into the furniture and walls too. I usually ordered more than a bowl every time I was there.
The outlet at Damansara Uptown or Damansara Utama is run by Mr Goh’s son, Alex. Alex and his wife, Audrey, carry on the family tradition of serving good beef noodles.
I visited on Day 6 after their opening. My order was a Mix 3 noodle set (RM26.90) which has tendon, sliced beef & stomach in it and came with an Iced Lemon Tea. I topped up the order with a side of beef ball soup (RM7.90)
The sauce remains as thick as it was and it looked like I remembered it. The last chance I had it was probably sometime in 2018. Some comments that I had read is that there wasn't enough “kiam chai” or salted vegetables in the serving. My first bite was that the flavours perhaps tasted a bit different from what I remembered.
Chatting with Alex, he says they are still fine tuning the sauce. 6 days after opening, this is to be expected. My arrival time at 1:30 pm coincided with a lull in customer flow after the lunch crowd had subsided. By 2 pm, the outlet had filled up again. Over-hearing some of the comments, many of the patrons there are from Seremban and had missed the noodles.
Alex suggested that I should try their beef jerky (RM29.90). It's written as special sliced beef on their menu. This is not the jerky that most of us are accustomed to. This was not a dish that was often available in Seremban because Mr Goh could not find the ingredients he wanted. Made only from top side beef, it is then put through their own process to be made into a slightly sweetened yet moist and flavourful piece of meat. At the shop they recommend that to consume it with their foaming iced lemon tea (looks like beer). I bought some home and had it with real beer. I think that went very well.
Prices are nett.
