We did a quick poll of this “new” place, Restoran Hwa Yan Kai PJ, right next to New Seaview in Sea Park. It has been around, dilapidated for decades. Recently, and I think this will be a gust of change for all trad kopitiams – it got a new AC section!
I imagine it will be hard for Seaview to compete over the years, if they too don’t AC up.
Hwa Yan Kai has a few anchor stars ✨- first thing I noticed was that all the stall operators are (still) local. Somewhat like Penang.
Chiefeater Maya whom “discovered” this haunt suggested the pork noodles and CKT. And so we had those. I saw a KSHF right in front of the store facade – so that we had to have too (MJ Wang is just a stone’s throw away).
I saw fresh ayam goreng berempah being fished out of the wok- the aroma was arresting – but no, not this time. Apparently the Nasi Lemak here has pork options as well!
So the ratings:
1. CKT = 6.5/10
2. Pork Noodles = 6.5/10
3. KSHF = 6.5/10
We tried the prawn noodles just for desserts and found it to be very able as well at 6/10
The scores might seem “less than 7”, but couple this with the AC environment/comfort for balmy days/lunches – and you will see how this place can only elevate over time.
I’d give Hwa Yan Kai (the store overall) a solid 7/10. We will be back surely.
