Snacks
I stopped at the fried dough stall outside in Pusat Bandar Puchong and picked up some ham chim pang and ma keok.
The ham chim pang was good. Freshly fried, the outside had that lightly crisp, slightly chewy texture you want before getting into the soft dough within. I particularly enjoyed the red bean ham chim pang, where the dense, mildly sweet red bean filling worked nicely against the savoury fried dough.
The ma keok, with its twisted shape and scattering of sesame seeds, was good too. This is the sort of traditional fried snack where texture matters as much as flavour, especially when you get it while it is still fresh from the fryer.
Nothing complicated here. Just good ham chim pang and ma keok, freshly fried at a roadside stall in front of a busy Puchong kopitiam.
Ham Chim Pang / Ma Keok – 4 pieces for RM6.40
That works out to RM1.60 per piece.
MVX Score: 8/10
M – Meal Value
At RM6.40 for four pieces, this remains an inexpensive snack, especially when eaten fresh.
Score: 8.5/10
V – Venue
The stall operates out front of the bustling Restoran Soon Sing 268. It’s very much a traditional kopitiam and roadside-stall experience rather than somewhere you come for the surroundings.
Score: 7/10
X – X-Factor
Freshly fried ham chim pang and ma keok are increasingly something I appreciate finding. The red bean filling and sesame-covered ma keok give you a couple of different ways to enjoy the fried dough.
Score: 8.5/10
