Vietnamese
We were treated to lunch at the dining area beside Le Café de Dinh at 135 Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa, within the grounds of Independence Palace in Ho Chi Minh City.

I’m not entirely certain whether this is a new dining area operated by the café or a separate restaurant, as there doesn’t appear to be a distinct name for it. But perhaps that doesn’t really matter.
What I remember most is the environment.
Independence Palace occupies an extraordinary green space in the middle of Ho Chi Minh City. Huge mature trees rise above broad lawns, with their canopies providing shade across the grounds. Looking towards the Palace from beneath these trees, it can be surprisingly easy to forget that you’re in the centre of one of Southeast Asia’s busiest cities.

And then there is the history. The present Independence Palace was built during the 1960s, but the site itself has a much longer history. More famously, this was where tanks entered the Palace grounds on 30 April 1975, marking the end of the Vietnam War.
Today, the atmosphere could hardly feel more different. Serenity and lush greenery greeted us.
Our meal was distinctly Vietnamese. There was a fish noodle soup generously covered with fresh dill, dry noodles with minced pork accompanied by a separate bowl of soup, stir-fried glass noodles with seafood and vegetables, and fried spring rolls.

The food was enjoyable, but none of those dishes became the story of this particular meal for me.
The environment did.
There is something quite special about sitting beneath those enormous trees, looking across the lawn towards a building that has witnessed some of the defining moments of modern Vietnamese history.
Ho Chi Minh City can be intense. Motorcycles, traffic, people and buildings seem to occupy almost every available space. Yet inside the grounds of Independence Palace, there is this remarkable pocket of green.
For me, that was what made this lunch memorable. Not what was on the table, but where the table was.
MVX Score: 7.8/10
M – Meal Value
We were treated to this meal, so I can’t assess value based on price. The Vietnamese dishes were enjoyable, particularly as a varied introduction to several different styles of noodles and accompaniments, but the food wasn’t the main reason this meal stayed with me.
Score: 7.0/10
V – Venue
This is where the experience really comes into its own. The mature trees, lawns and greenery surrounding Independence Palace create an unexpectedly peaceful environment in central Ho Chi Minh City. Having lunch with the Palace and its history just beyond the trees gives the setting a character that an ordinary restaurant simply cannot reproduce.
Score: 9.0/10
X – X-Factor
Few dining environments come with this much historical context. The contrast is what makes it memorable: a place associated with one of the defining moments of modern Vietnamese history is today somewhere you can sit quietly beneath the trees and have lunch.
Score: 8.5/10
