Xi Guan Puchong Char Siew Rice

Pork Rice

Description

Post by Chiefeater VK

Sometimes the simplest dishes are the most satisfying, and this was one of those meals. Instead of their signature wonton noodles, I decided to try the Double Fried Egg Rice with Char Siu (RM17.90) at Xi Guan Puchong.

The bowl arrived with fluffy rice topped with two perfectly cooked fried eggs, slices of caramelised char siu, crispy pork lard cubes, diced preserved radish and a side of blanched greens. Give everything a good mix and the runny yolks coat every grain of rice, creating a wonderfully rich combination.

How Was the Food?

This is comfort food done right. The first thing that stood out was the char siew. It had a beautiful caramelised crust with just enough char to bring out its smoky sweetness. Thankfully, it wasn’t cloyingly sweet like some versions. Instead, there was a well-balanced ratio of lean meat and fat, giving every bite plenty of flavour while remaining juicy.

Then there were the crispy pork lard pieces. Pork lard mixed into hot rice with runny egg yolk is one of those combinations that’s difficult to resist. The crunchy bits added another layer of texture while their rendered fat gave the rice an extra savoury richness.

The fried eggs were cooked just right, with soft yolks that flowed into the rice and tied everything together. Together with the preserved radish and greens, the bowl never felt one-dimensional despite its apparent simplicity.

It’s the sort of dish that doesn’t rely on complicated ingredients. Every component simply does its job well.
