Housed in the heritage heart of Georgetown, Yolk PG adds a contemporary heartbeat to its beautiful historical location fronting Weld Quay. Despite its daunting stairs, my mother said she was game to try as the food looked so good. With help, she made it up and Yolk’s offerings proved worth the climb.
Housed on the massive first level, the cafe shares its premises by night with the Japanese cafe-bar, Over & Above. A cook since he was 17, Yolk PG’s head chef Jack Ng, returned from his Beijing posting during the pandemic. Now, he whips up deliciousness against the backdrop of one of Penang’s best-known pre-war settings.

Seated by a window overlooking the sea, we had mains of salmon with truffle mash, rustic baked eggs & creamy mushroom chicken schnitzel.

For dessert, the buttermilk hotcakes, liberally sprinkled with berries, cream & toasted biscuit crumble.

Portions were sizeable and my baked eggs deserve a special mention for the delectable herbed tomato pork stew & crisp accompanying garlic sourdough – quite the dream on a dish. While Yolk PG’s prices aren’t super low, they’re reasonable for the quality of food served. Repurposed heritage never tasted this good.
