Ban Chang Kuih, Dessert, Street Food, Pork-Free
One of the popular snacks in Penang is peanut pancake. It is called 'bang chien kueh' or 'ban chang kuih' in the local Hokkien dialect. This simple snack is available in many places here from early morning till evening. However, this tricycle stall in Jalan Raja Uda must be the one with the shortest trading hours. The 'ban chien kuih' here is available from 1.30 pm and it is usually sold-out two hours later.
Mr Lim, the soft-spoken proprietor of Jalan Raja Uda Ban Chang Kuih learnt this trade from his father. He has now been selling 'ban chien kuih' for the past 15 years. His pandan-flavoured 'ban chien kuih' is definitely worth a try if it is convenient for you to be there within the two hours.
The batter is allowed to cook slowly till it is golden brown in colour.
The 'ban chien kuih' is cut into halves and folded into a semi-circular piece. Then it is left to cool for a few minutes.
One can catch a whiff of the pandan's fragrance from the hot 'ban chien kuih'.
Some people like the pieces with the crispy edges.
Each small piece costs RM1.50. It used to be less than a ringgit.
