Shawarma, Mutabal, Hummus, Pork-free
Chef Ammar Mediterranean, Middle East and Grill Restaurant in USJ4 may look unassuming but it is one USJ’s most popular restaurant. Go there at peak hours, you are likely to queue to get a table. They are also one of the most reviewed restaurants in USJ with over 2,000 reviews on Google. We arrived there just after 12 noon and all tables had already been taken. We had to sit outside the restaurant and wait for our turn to be summoned into the presence of the food haven.

Thankfully, our wait was only about 5 minutes. Once seated, they gave us time to figure out what to order. It wasn’t had to decide. I didn’t want rice so it was a Lamb Shawarma set (RM48), a Mutabal (that’s a grilled egg plant dip priced at RM19) and a Hummus Chicken Shawarma (RM25). Both the Mutabal and Hummus comes with a lovely piece of Lebanese flat bread. After we made our order, the waitress said it would take about 30 minutes for the order to arrive. Setting the expectations so that you know what to expect. But again they over-delivered with the food arriving in just about 15 minutes.
While well seasoned, I found the the Lamb meat too hard and dry for my liking. Perhaps this had to do with the lamb being on the skewer for too long, I don’t know. But we certainly enjoyed the Mutabal and Hummus Chicken Shawarma. We noticed that all the other diners there ordered the rice sets. So perhaps that is their best dish but I was off rice the day I was there.
