KL's dining scene has a new gem: Kumo Omakase in Damansara Heights. Opened by a group of food-loving entrepreneurs, this restaurant brings a slice of Japan to Malaysia, helmed by Chef Sean Cheng, who has returned from Singapore to lead the culinary experience.
I was hosted to lunch by one of the founders of the restaurant. Our lunch experience began with appetizers of white fish carpaccio and gyoza. The carpaccio, topped with truffle, was a delightful surprise. The truffle's earthy aroma complemented rather than overpowered the delicate flounder, creating a harmonious balance of flavours. The gyoza was equally impressive, setting a high standard for the courses to follow.
Next, we were treated to three types of seasonal sashimi. Each slice was fresh and paired beautifully with the premium soju that was served. The combination elevated the sashimi experience, allowing the subtle flavours of the fish to shine through.
The snow crab chawanmushi that followed was a highlight. Snow crab, known for its sweet, delicate flavour and tender texture, added a luxurious touch to the creamy, smooth chawanmushi. Each bite was a testament to Chef Sean's skill in balancing flavours and textures and letting the ingredients shine.
Our host added a special treat: giant abalone. We learned that abalones of this size are often restricted for export by the Japanese government to ensure ample supply domestically. This abalone was served with a sauce made from abalone liver, rich in umami, enhancing the already exquisite flavour of the abalone.
A perfectly grilled fish course came next.
Just before the next course of sushi, our host graciously opened a bottle of Dassai 23, a high-quality sake known for its sweetness.
The sake paired perfectly with the sushi, particularly the toro (tuna belly) sushi, which was melt-in-your-mouth goodness.
The handroll, also made with tuna, was another delightful bite, showcasing the freshness and quality of the ingredients.
And then came the most exquisite don set which included seafood and A5 wagyu, all the proteins you need.
We concluded our meal with a clear and satisfying clam soup, followed by a selection of fresh fruits. This light and refreshing end to the meal was the perfect complement to the rich and varied courses that preceded it.
Lunch Omakase begins at RM288 and RM438 per person. You can add on ala-carte items like the abalone as long as they are available. Kumo Omakase offers an exceptional dining experience, at a fair price and the beverage offerings are a delightful pairing too. It's a great addition to KL's culinary landscape, and I look forward to returning for another memorable meal.
