Indian, Pork-Free
Jen and I were looking for lunch Brickfields when I noticed Gem Restaurant Brickfields. It had been a long time since I last visited, with my first encounter being over 20 years ago when an ex-colleague introduced me to it. Feeling nostalgic, we decided to give it a try.
We ordered tandoori chicken and mutton rogan josh. Tandoori chicken is a popular Indian dish where chicken is marinated in yogurt and spices, then roasted in a tandoor, a traditional clay oven. The result is tender, smoky, and flavourful chicken with a vibrant red hue. Mutton rogan josh, on the other hand, is a rich, aromatic curry from the Kashmir region, made with tender mutton pieces cooked in a sauce of yogurt, garlic, and a blend of spices, including cardamom and cloves.
Both dishes were still as good as I remembered. The tandoori chicken was perfectly cooked, with a nice balance of spices and a wonderful smoky flavour. The chicken was moist and tender.

The mutton rogan josh was boneless, which made it even more pleasurable to eat, with tender, flavourful pieces of mutton in a thick, aromatic gravy.

The basmati rice served alongside was excellent, with each grain perfectly cooked and fragrant. I also enjoyed the masala tea, which was served unsweetened, allowing the diner to add sugar to taste. It was the perfect ending to the meal.

Our lunch came up to RM79.70 for two. While not cheap, the quality of the food and the nostalgic experience made it worth every penny. Gem Restaurant Brickfields remains a lovely place to enjoy authentic Indian cuisine in Brickfields.
