I was pleasantly surprised by the Bak Chor Mee from Somerset Fishball Noodles at Empress Road Food Centre. As we just moved nearby, finding the nearest local wet markets was a baseline activity; and in Singapore where there’s a market, there’s a food court!
While smaller than the other major wet markets eg AMK, Tiong Bahru etc, the Empress Market (Farrer Road) exuded angmo vibes.
My first visit here after buying some local produce, I had to sample what was available. If you recall my 3 principles of Singapore hawker fare; one of it was what we can’t find in Malaysia. Scanning the stores, I saw 2 bak chor mee stalls, and I chose Somerset (which is an area near Orchard ironically). The old couple manning the stall must have once lived or operated their premise in Somerset decades ago.

I went for the staple mee pok (dry) with soup on the side. The dish was beautifully presented, featuring a generous serving of springy noodles, perfectly cooked to an al dente texture. The toppings included a variety of high-quality ingredients such as succulent prawns, flavorful sliced liver, minced meat, crispy pork lard, and fresh spring onions. Each component was meticulously prepared, contributing to a well-balanced and flavorful meal.

The fishballs, a highlight of the dish, were impressively bouncy and juicy, showcasing their handmade quality. The accompanying sauce was rich and savory, enhancing the overall taste without being overly salty. The addition of crispy pork lard added a delightful crunch, complementing the tender noodles and soft fishballs.
The Bak Chor Mee at Somerset Fishball Noodles truly stands out for its combination of traditional flavors and meticulous preparation. It’s no surprise that this stall is popular among locals and often sees long queues. If you’re in the area, this dish is definitely worth a try for an authentic and satisfying hawker food experience.
Overall, the Bak Chor Mee from Somerset Fishball Noodles at Empress Road Food Centre delivers on both taste and quality, making it a must-try for anyone looking to enjoy a classic Singaporean dish.
The amount of pork lard was more than usual – that’s a standout for me. 7/10 for this Singapore staple at Somerset Fishball Noodle.
