Chakri Palace KLCC can be considered one of the earliest premium Thai restaurants to have graced the restaurant scene in KL. It has since firmly established itself as the go-to place for authentic Thai food at a price in high end malls. But is it really deserving of its legacy in Malaysia?
Well, a little bit of yes and a whole lot of no.
Let's start with the drinks. They are expensively priced but less than good if I may be at my most polite. Watered down soursop with nary a hint of guava unlike its namesake.
The red Tom Yum was served in a nondescript bowl that would remind you of the bowl that you use at home to hold your soup. Zero effort from a restaurant with a bonafide reputation. The soup itself was just salty with an excess amount of fish sauce. Worse, the prawns that came with it were not fresh at all.
The stir fry vegetables dish was on the other end of the spectrum - subtly flavorful. I guess it was their way to balance out our palate. How considerate.
I did not get to eat the fish cake as I wanted to give my portion to my nephew. Through my family's reaction, it was just ok. Nothing spectacular.
The glass noodle salad was just sweet and lacked that zesty and refreshing taste that one would expect of a Thai salad.
The deep fried sotong in a thing layer of batter was acceptable. Not totally flavorful but went well with the Thai chili sauce of the supermarket kind.
To save the best for last, the steamed fish with lime was the saving grace. Perfectly steamed in a pool of flavorful but sourish soup. This was the only dish that made me order a second helping of rice.
Last not but least, the quintessential mango sticky rice to finish off the dinner. It was within expectation and I like the slightly salty taste of the coconut cream that balances out the sweetness of the mangoes. Another dish worthy of your attention.
It was a treat from my younger brother and the whole thing cost a whopping RM498. Not all are fine with Chakri Palace KLCC but they are some worthy dishes if you know where to start. The problem is which ones to start with for the uninitiated? With so much competition out there and Para Thai as one of them, Chakri Palace needs a new breath of fresh air to rebrand itself.
