Chicken Rice, Non-Halal
Chiefeater GIJoe had one last request before we left Ipoh—chicken rice. Naturally, we headed to Lou Wong, but even on a weekday, there was a long queue snaking out the door. Not wanting to waste time, we quickly crossed the street to Ong Kee Restaurant, which had a table available for us almost immediately.
In terms of efficiency, Ong Kee Restaurant gets top marks. Within 10 minutes of placing our order, the food arrived at our table. The chicken, a staple at any Ipoh chicken rice joint, was decent. Tender and lightly flavoured, though not particularly memorable. We also had some chicken innards. We chose to have the chicken with hor fun rather than rice because Ipoh's hor fun is famous for their silky smoothness.
The standout, for me, was their hor fun. The noodles were incredibly smooth, almost gliding down with each bite. It was the one part of the meal that really stood out, reminding me of the charm that Ipoh is known for when it comes to noodles. I did like the gizzard too (top right in the picture below)
That said, I can’t shake the feeling that Ong Kee Restaurant caters more to tourists than locals. While the meal was solid and the service impeccable, it lacked that distinctiveness that separates an authentic food experience from a tourist-driven one. However, they do get top marks for efficiency.
