Gou Lou Hong Kee Chao Sar Hor Fun. The Gou Lou (“Tall Guy”)'s sar hor fun stall was one of the mainstays at the now-defunct Yi Garden coffeeshop on the junction of MacAlister Road and Lorong Selamat. Founded in the 1930s, their sar hor fun was one of the most popular in town, alongside Foo Heong on Cintra Street and Seng Kee on Dato’ Keramat Road.
The Cantonese Thum family has been running the business from generation to generation since the 1930s. The current owner-chef is 60-something year-old Mr Thum Soon Choong aka "Gou Lou", who’d been frying the signature sar hor fun and yee fu mee since taking over from his uncle over 40 years ago at Lorong Selamat.
Sar hor fun.
Yee fu mee - in Cantonese, it's called ee-fu mein, and originates in the Qing Dynasty.
An in depth into a Ee Fu Mee recipe.
His two sons, Thum Choon How and Thum Choon Siong, now help him run their family restaurant, Gou Lou Hong Kee Chao Sar Hor Fun, on Campbell Street. The Thum family are some of the most pleasant and friendly people around!
