Prawn Mee, Curry Mee, Non-Halal
Oo White Coffee, a beloved kopitiam hailing from Penang, has expanded its footprint to PJ with Oo White Coffee KL. Of course, they have brought along their signature white coffee and popular Penang dishes like Hokkien Mee (Prawn Mee as we know it here in KL) and Curry Mee. They are hidden behind Imazium, next to Starling Mall, but that hasn't stopped the crowds from finding them. Their location within an office building might make some wonder about the quality of their food. Naturally, I had to find out.
I started with the Hokkien Mee (RM14.90), which was a satisfying bowl. The noodles were cooked just right. Firm with a good bite, avoiding the dreaded overcooked softness. The broth was a standout: a rich, savoury base with a delicate hint of sweetness that tied everything together. I added an extra serving of prawns (RM5), which added a to my indulgence of this dish.
Jen chose the Curry Mee (RM14.90) which turned out to be equally enjoyable. This is a White Curry Mee. The creamy, fragrant broth had a depth of flavour that she found pleasing.
I also sampled their white coffee (RM5.80), which lived up to its reputation. Aromatic and full-bodied, it was the perfect soothing companion to the savoury noodle, complementing the meal beautifully.
I was tempted to order the Char Kuey Teow as I noticed it being served to other tables. Its darker-than-usual appearance, however, gave me pause. Perhaps a touch too much soy sauce? It didn’t look as promising, though taste might tell a different story. Dare I try the next time?
I dare say Oo White Coffee KL has successfully brought its Penang charm to PJ.
