Chai Leng Park Food Street, Penang | Dinner with the Locals.
When visiting Butterworth, Penang, the most direct way to understand the local food culture is to explore the markets and hawker centers.

This time, we visited Chai Leng Park food street, recommended by a local friend. Starting at 4 pm every day, food stalls gradually open, filling the street with the aroma of fried kway teow, fried chicken, and various other snacks.

This isn’t a tourist area, but it’s a favorite dinner spot for locals after get off work.

Our first stop was a refreshing iced drink.

A generously filled iced drink with toppings like longan, dried longan, sweet potato, white fungus, and agar-agar, it was icy cold and sweet, especially refreshing in Penang’s hot weather. At RM6 a bowl, it was well worth it.

Next, of course, we couldn’t miss one of Penang’s signature dishes—char kuey teow.

This long-established stall, operating since 1982, insists on using the traditional charcoal-fired stir-fry method, resulting in a rich, wok-hei flavor. The fresh prawns are crisp and springy, and the kueh teow (rice noodles) are incredibly flavorful after absorbing the savory sauce. While the fried egg may not look particularly appealing, the crispy edges make it a satisfying accompaniment to the stir-fried kueh teow.

The third stall was Lok Lok, a local favorite by the sea.

They offer over 50 types of skewers to choose from, including seafood, meats, vegetables, stuffed ingredients, and meatballs. Prices range from RM1 to RM4 per skewer, priced according to color. You can choose to have them boiled or deep-fried; I personally prefer the deep-fried skewers—crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

The highlight is the owner’s homemade chili sauce, a tangy and spicy blend with a strong Thai flavor. Even though it made me sweat profusely, it was irresistible to keep eating.

The fourth stall was Chen Ping Jin Noodle Stall, always bustling with customers.

Both the takeaway and dine-in areas were packed; we waited a full half hour to get our food. The signature large lok noodles are similar to KL Hokkien noodles, but with thicker, chewier noodles, a rich savory sauce, and a satisfying texture.

Another dish, fried yi mein with scrambled eggs, is almost a must-order at every table. The golden-brown, crispy yi mein is topped with a scrambled egg sauce, somewhat reminiscent of KL Cantonese scrambled egg noodles—rich in egg flavor, layered in texture, and very unique.

Of course, we had to take some home.

A Google search revealed that TipTop Hometown Chicken is actually the signature fried chicken at Chai Leng Park.

A long queue had already formed shortly after opening. I initially thought it was just ordinary fried chicken, but it was a pleasant surprise.

The outer skin was fried to a golden-brown, crispy perfection, making a satisfying crunch when you bite into it, while the chicken inside remained juicy and tender. One bite, and the juices burst out, the meat tender and succulent.
No wonder it has such a high Google rating.
As a fried chicken lover, this definitely deserves a place in my Top 10 list of the best fried chicken in my life.

One street, from bao liang (a type of cold noodle dish), char kway teow (fried kuey teow), lok lok (a type of noodle dish), da lok mee (a type of noodle dish) to fried chicken, we ate our way from afternoon until evening.

If you ask me where to experience the most authentic local dinner culture in Butterworth, I would recommend Taman Negara.

Because here you’ll find more than just delicious food; you’ll experience the daily life of Penangites.
