Pasta, Non-Halal
Dinner at Base Pasta Bar & Bistro in Bukit Jalil was a much-anticipated treat, courtesy of Chiefeater Kenny Loh. Located in an intimate space with minimalist décor, the restaurant seats just about 30 diners. While its cosy setup adds to its charm, the noise level rises significantly once it fills up, making conversation a bit of a challenge.

The casual vibe here extends even to the tableware. If you order wine, don’t expect traditional wine glasses—you’ll be sipping from bulbous glass instead.
The menu offered a broad selection of starters, pasta dishes and meat.

Our dinner consisted of starters, pasta and a towering stack of pork ribs. Throughout the meal, the dishes impressed with their bold, unapologetic flavours. Nothing was under-seasoned, and the colours of each plate really caught attention.
A highlight of Base Pasta is its commitment to serving pasta the authentic way—perfectly al dente. For those unaccustomed to this, it’s a firmer bite, but it allows the textures and sauces to marry beautifully. Chef Jay, the creative mind behind the menu, doesn’t shy away from pushing the envelope. His sauces are adventurous, featuring unique combinations like peppercorn butter that intrigue and surprise the palate.

The standout of the evening for me at Base Pasta Bar, was the “base” Ssam. Salmon tartare, yuzu aioli, quinoa tabouleh, Hokkaido ikuras served with crisp nori seaweed chips. It delivered a delightful interplay of textures and tastes. The seafood goodness of the salmon and ikura, the crunch of the cracker, and the umami undertones created a harmonious and memorable dish.
