Chiefeater Leyriesa Ann Tan enjoyed charcoal steamboat served at Tan Tan Charcoal Steamboat Austin in Johor Bahru
Chinese, Sang Cheong, Non-Halal
It had been quite a while since my last visit to Mooi Jie Kitchen, but I found myself there for lunch today. True to its reputation, the restaurant didn’t disappoint. Among the spread of dishes we ordered, the stir-fried sang cheong (fallopian tube) was the star of the meal, and it’s easy to see why it remains one of their standout offerings.
The sang cheong was impeccably fried. Crunchy yet tender, with a satisfying bite. The addition of dried prawns elevated the dish, imparting a savoury, umami-packed flavour that paired beautifully with the bits of chili scattered throughout. The subtle heat from the chili added a kick without overwhelming the dish, striking just the right balance to highlight the rich, layered flavours.
While we enjoyed a variety of other dishes, none quite captured the spotlight for me like the sang cheong. At RM30 per plate, it’s a dish that exemplifies the kitchen’s consistency and quality.
Mooi Jie Kitchen is not the place to go to if you are looking for a classy restaurant. It's a simple restaurant that just serves good food at decent prices in air-conditioned comfort.
