After sampling the under-the-radar Peng Yuan Hokkien Mee the week before, we decided to revisit the better-known Restoran Ah Wa Hokkien Mee, just a short distance away — a spot often lit up both literally and in reputation.

The difference hits you immediately. Restoran Ahwa Hokkien Mee dazzles with bright lights, a constant crowd, and the hum of fast-moving kitchen energy. Despite the restaurant being packed, our order was processed swiftly, and the food arrived in no time.

The Hokkien Mee here leans towards a wetter, more charred version — bold in flavour, but the charred notes may polarise. It’s undeniably punchy, but that intensity might not be to everyone’s liking. I did find myself wishing for more fried lard, which was a little too modestly used in this rendition.

The Ying Yang (a mix of wat tan hor and Cantonese fried noodles) was serviceable, though it didn’t quite stand out — solid, but not stirring. At least it was served hot unlike the one we had at Peng Yuan.

We ordered portions for 3 pax per dish, and each came up to RM40 for a 3 pax serving. While the food was decent, this felt like a case where branding, reputation, and bright lights outshone the quieter but just-as-worthy contender up the road.

Ah Wa delivers on efficiency and atmosphere — but for some, the subtler charms of Peng Yuan may be the better-kept secret.
