Dim Sum, Non-Halal
Restoran Foo Hing Dim Sum Puchong has been operating in Puchong since 2009. Or it could have been earlier. When it started, it was on a street that had at least 5 dim sum restaurants. However only 2 remains now. And Foo Hing is bigger than before, with a new outlet opening in USJ Taipan in 2020.
Our last visit here in 2021 was not a memorable experience. The dim sum wasn’t tasty and we were wondering why we even bothered. I still don’t know what possessed us to give it a visit again. It might have been the recent Says article rating them as one of the top 13 places in KL to go for dim sum. Do you agree with that list?
Recently Chiefeater Yong Choy Peng reviewed their Portuguese Egg Tarts. That is one of the items that they are famous for and arguably the one that made their reputation. We were just 2 but we still ordered about 9 items. The egg tarts were among them. It did not disappoint. Looking at the close up photo, you can see the layering of the puff pastry. That gives it a light crunchy and flaky feel as you bite into the tart.

I am happy to report that we were happy with most of the items we ordered. The dim sum tasted good. It is not the best I have had but they are better than average. The Har Gao’s skin was a bit dry but the prawn was fresh and springy. The Siew Mai was a tad on the hard side though it did come with a shrimp mixed into the filling. The Shanghai Dumpling too was too thick skinned.

The char siew bao’s bread wrapping was too thick and lacked the soft fluffiness of a good bao. The char siew felt more liked a braised meat than a barbecued meat. And the meat was perhaps too lean and lacking tenderness.

The service staff were quick and attentive despite the outlet being full on a weekday morning. We were on the first floor and even here, there was just so much buzz in the dining hall.
Now this is the part that we weren’t expecting. Our total bill for the 2 of us came up to RM89.10. Yes, this included a 10% service charge and the 6% SST.
The prices are almost comparable to what would be paid at a Chinese restaurant. The question is was the food at Restoran Foo Hing Dim Sum that good to warrant that price? Personally I reckon that it isn’t.
