Claypot Chicken Rice, Street Food
Despite the road works outside blocking the view, it has not stopped the faithful from making a beeline for Heun Kee.

We arrived just after 6 pm on a weekday and there was already a queue waiting to get in. The famous claypots are visible outside, cooking over charcoal. My last trip prior to this visit in Dec 2025 was probably more than a decade ago.

The service is efficient; they made short work of the crowd by quickly taking our order and ushering us into the adjacent kopitiam, which they take over in the evenings - a clever collaboration to manage demand.

The sides arrived before the main event: the Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves (RM12.00) were tasty.

We also ordered the Pig Stomach with Pepper Soup (RM12.00). The soup itself was interesting, having a warm pepper heat balanced by a slight sweetish taste. My only critique is that the pig stomach slices were too soft for my liking. I prefer a more substantial chew—though the flavor was good.

Then came the Claypot Chicken Rice for 2 pax (RM28.00). The aroma alone, a mix of sesame oil and burnt charcoal, was lovely. I immediately mixed in the salted fish (served in a small side bowl). I loved that there was a generous amount of rice crust at the bottom of the claypot, the true mark of a good claypot rice. While the texture of the rice and the chicken was excellent, I did find the rice lacking a bit of seasoning, but a splash of their soy sauce fixed that immediately.

Claypot Chicken Rice (Big) - RM28.00
Pig Stomach with Pepper Soup (Small) - RM12.00
Sweet Potato Leaves (Small) - RM12.00
Total Bill for 2 pax with drinks - RM67.85
Score: 8/10
M – Meal Value
RM67.85 for two people including a substantial main, soup, and vegetable is good value for a Michelin Bib Gourmand-awarded restaurant. The portions are generous.
Score: 8.0/10
V – Venue & Vibes
The atmosphere of the charcoal cooking line outside and the efficient use of the next-door kopitiam for seating is classic Pudu. I think sitting next door is actually better than the original outlet. Expect queues, but the experience is authentic.
Score: 8.0/10
X – X-Factor
The execution of the claypot rice is top-notch though it was let down but the seasoning. The combination of charcoal aroma and the abundant, caramelized rice crust at the bottom makes this a memorable and unique meal.
