Hang Chow Coffee Shop Char Koay Teow

Char Kuey Teow

Description

Post by Chiefeater VK

Some coffee shops try to recreate nostalgia. Hang Chow Coffee Shop doesn’t have to. It has simply carried on doing what it has always done. Located along Lebuh Chulia, it feels like one of the surviving neighbourhood coffee shops that once defined George Town. The tiled floors, wooden chairs, faded menu boards and unpretentious dining room may look like a relic from another era, but don’t mistake age for decline. The food here is better than decent.

To start the morning, I ordered 2 Fried Eggs with Toast. There wasn’t anything elaborate about it, but sometimes that’s exactly the point. The eggs arrived with beautifully runny yolks while the toast provided the crisp, buttery base needed for a comforting breakfast before a day of exploring Penang.

We also shared a plate of Penang Fried Koay Teow. Visually, it doesn’t look good. In fact, it looks rather understated. The first mouthful tells a different story.

We requested it spicy and, although the colour remained deceptively light, the heat slowly built with each bite. The wok hei wasn’t overpowering but gave the noodles enough smokiness to complement the savoury seasoning. More importantly, the prawns were fresh, plump and naturally sweet, adding substance rather than simply acting as garnish.

It is easy to overlook places like Hang Chow Coffee Shop when newer cafés dominate social media feeds. Yet establishments like this remind you why traditional kopitiams remain an important part of Penang’s food culture. They focus on straightforward cooking and consistency instead of presentation.

Sometimes, that’s exactly what you’re looking for.
