Western, Non-Halal
I came across this restaurant called Smores Puchong at IOI Rio City while grocery shopping. So I came back here with my family to try it out. I was greeted and brought to a table that was rather small for 3 people. It was 4 when I found out my brother’s friend was joining. I requested to change to a bigger table and was promptly brought to a more spacious corner. I see a stern looking chef looking out into the half full premises. After we settled down, the place was briskly filled up. The place is cozy and with the right amount of lighting to be able to see what I’m eating. A phone with a better camera can capture the dishes just fine.
The Gathering
A variety of pork dishes served on a plate with an impression of a metal pig head on one side. Amongst them, a very delicious and flavourful sausage, grilled pork with some areas a bit charred (my least fave), the highlight of the bunch pancetta (round shaped siew yuk), deep fried shallots and fries, some kimchi and pickled cabbage and the lone piece of bacon. I got the bacon.

The pancetta was no doubt the highlight of the bunch. The skin had the right amount of crisp without being hard. The saturated fats just ooze out of the crispy skin as I bit into it, assaulting my senses and bestowed great satisfaction in me. The deep fried shallots were a nice surprise. I had no problem putting both the shallots and the fries into my mouth in equal measures.
Silly Calabrian
A pasta dish that was just a tad salty but flavourful at the same time. The seafood was fresh and the pasta was cooked to al dente with a dark sauce that I can only assume it’s squid ink. That lone piece of big headed prawn was mine to have and it was fresh and full of prawn flavor. A really nice touch as I don’t ever remember any pasta I had served this particular species of prawn. Just as tasty as the big headed prawns that I used to have at Ipoh’s Pusing Restaurant.

Tribute(v)
A pizza to tribute to who? I have no idea but the mark of a good pizza is when you are able to pull off a simple cheese and tomato pizza is the mark of a good chef. And he delivered. I like the fact that it’s not those gimmicky cheesy pizza where you see strings of cheese when you try to take one slice out. Nope, this one has the right amount of cheese and tomato flavor that complements each other very well. The pizza was thin enough not to feel like I’m eating a piece of biscuits.

Drinks
The drinks are pretty to look at and do taste good. However I prefer my mother’s Yuzu Tonic to my Grapefruit Mint Seltzer. But everybody agreed the Fragrance Lychee was the best with its golden appearance and the more familiar canned lychee flavor. That was not a shade.

We finished our dinner with two slices of cakes. Mango Yuzu and Wonderwoman. As I like anything Yuzu, the former was good enough for me. It was more of a gelatinous cream to me than cake and I didn’t mind at all. The Wonderwoman to me was a mismatched. A strong chocolatey flavor that was in total contrast to the sourish berry in the middle. I think the chocolate layer is fine on its own without the unwelcome distraction of that berry layer.

The bill came up to RM328. I say it’s worth it and a second visit is called for in future.
