Kung Fu Chow, Street Food
Sometimes RM20 can still buy a surprisingly substantial dinner in Puchong. I ordered the Kung Fu Chow Ying Yong at Ramai Food Centre for dinner, and the two-person portion turned out to be very generous. There was more than enough here for two people, making the RM20 price particularly good value.
Ying Yong gives you two different noodles on the same plate, fried kuey teow together with crispy fried vermicelli, covered with the thick egg gravy of a Kung Fu Chow.
Of the two, Jen and I preferred the kuey teow.
It had been properly fried before the gravy went over it and had a good wok hei. That smoky flavour was still noticeable even after the noodles had been sitting underneath all that gravy, and it gave the softer kuey teow considerably more character.
The fried vermicelli didn’t work quite as well for me. It provided the textural contrast you expect from Ying Yong, but the flavour of the kuey teow was better.
The gravy itself was pretty decent. Thick and eggy, with pork and greens scattered through it, there was certainly enough gravy to work its way through that large pile of noodles.
This wasn’t an elaborate dinner, nor did it need to be. It was a satisfying plate of old-school dai chow noodles, and at RM20 for a portion this size, I’d have no complaints ordering it again.
Kung Fu Chow Ying Yong, 2 pax serving — RM20
Total paid — RM20
Average per pax — RM10
MVX Score: 7.5/10
M – Meal Value: 8.5/10
RM20 for a two-person serving this generous is excellent value. There was plenty of noodles and gravy for two people, working out to only RM10 per person.
V – Venue: 6.0/10
Ramai Food Centre is a traditional non air-conditioned Puchong food court with multiple hawker stalls, making it the sort of place where everyone can order something different. It is also open around the clock.
X – X-Factor: 8/10
The fried kuey teow was what made the difference. It had a good wok hei that remained noticeable underneath the egg gravy. Between the two noodles in the Ying Yong, that was easily my preferred half.
This stall opens daily in the evenings
