Grilled Chicken Wings at Restoran Soon Sing

Chicken Wings, Street Food

Description

Post by Chiefeater VK

Restoran Soon Sing has become one of those places where there seems to be something worth eating in almost every direction. This time, it was the grilled chicken wings that caught my attention.

In fact, Soon Sing has two stalls selling these wings, which probably tells you something about the footfall here.

The stall located at the front of the kopitiam starts operating from around 6pm, but I wouldn’t necessarily rush there right at opening time. I prefer giving the charcoal fire some time to really get going. Once there’s proper heat in the grill, the wings develop that combination of caramelisation, char and smoky aroma that makes charcoal-grilled chicken so satisfying.

And these were good.

The wings arrived with a beautiful deep mahogany glaze, the skin picking up darker caramelised patches from the grill. What I particularly liked was the savoury flavour. There was enough seasoning and sweetness in the marinade to give the chicken character without turning it into an overly sugary glazed wing.

The meat remained juicy underneath, while the exterior had that slightly sticky, smoky finish you want from this style of grilled chicken.

At RM21 for three sets of wings, they are also easy enough to add to a larger makan session at Soon Sing. Get a plate for the table, pull the sections apart with your fingers and don’t worry too much about keeping them clean.

For me, these are one of the better grilled chicken wings I’ve had around Pusat Bandar Puchong.

MVX Summary

MVX Score: 7.5/10

M – Meal Value
RM21 for three sets of wings is reasonable, particularly for wings coming straight off a charcoal grill.
Score: 8.0/10

V – Venue
This is classic Puchong kopitiam eating. Busy, casual and with plenty of other stalls around if you’re putting together a larger meal.
Score: 6.5/10

X – X-Factor
That savoury marinade combined with a properly fired-up charcoal grill. Come a little later rather than being the first customer at 6pm.
