The Beef Capsicum Fried Rice from Lao Hu Nan Puchong impressed me in a slightly unusual way. I didn’t eat it when it was freshly cooked.

It had actually spent five days in my freezer.

After reheating it in the microwave, I wasn’t expecting it to be anywhere near its best. Yet the aroma was immediately evident when it came out. That alone told me quite a bit about how much flavour had gone into the fried rice in the first place.

And it still tasted excellent.

The rice remained nicely separated rather than turning into a soft mass, with egg, small pieces of capsicum and beef distributed throughout. The beef brought a deeper savoury note while the capsicum contributed its distinctive aroma without dominating the rice.

Freezing and microwave reheating are hardly ideal conditions for judging fried rice. Moisture migrates as food freezes and thaws, while reheating can easily leave rice either dry or clumped together. So for this to retain both its aroma and a good eating texture after five days in the freezer was impressive.

There was another pleasant surprise: the portion.

I paid RM20.90 for the Beef Capsicum Fried Rice through delivery, and that single box was enough for both Jen and me.

I’ve enjoyed Lao Hu Nan since they first opened at IOI Mall Puchong, but this fried rice gives me another reason to order from them again. If it was this enjoyable after five days in my freezer and a trip through the microwave, I’d really like to have it freshly fried at the restaurant next time.
