Olden day munchies. Affordable and fills the tummy snacks. Yau Char Kwai or directly translated as Oil Fried Devils comes in many shapes, sizes, and fillings besides the usual stick type. Old Market Food Court houses one such stall that opens for Breakfast. One could easily miss out this stall. It’s located in a hidden area behind the Curry Mee stall.
This stalls has become a rarity in big Urban areas but still commonly found in smaller towns, sleepy hollow etc. Being eaten as a snack, not as a accompaniment to Porridge or Bak Kut Teh. Butterworth is one such town, where there a number of such stalls that operate at all times of the day. Usually for Breakfast and Dinner.
Purchased some to tapau for the kids and had a Ham Cheem Pang or Red bean Devil to supplement the Hokkien Mee.

Yau Char Kwai is a type of deep-fried dough stick that is also known as “Chinese cruller” or “Chinese donut”. It’s made by mixing flour, yeast, sugar, and water to form a dough, which is then cut into long strips and deep-fried until golden brown. The result is a crispy, crunchy snack that is often enjoyed with coffee or tea as a breakfast food or mid-day snack.
The uniqueness comes from its versatility. It can be eaten plain or dipped in kopi. It can also be served alongside other breakfast favourites like porridge or bak kut teh.
