Roast Duck, Wantan Mee, Chinese, Pork-Free
I now have another option for roast duck courtesy of The Travelling Duck Pavilion Bukit Jalil. Do note that they are pork-free and don’t go there expecting to have char siew or siew yoke together with the duck. However, I don’t think it takes anything away from enjoying the duck. Personally, I rather enjoy having a duck by itself rather than having it being accompanied by pork dishes. Duck and a bottle of red wine. No they don’t serve red wine here either.
The first time I remember I was impressed by their duck was when I had it at their Tropicana Garden Mall outlet last year. Since then, I have not been back there. So when I saw that it had opened at Bukit Jalil, I knew it was time for a revisit.
However, I made a mistake this time. I got talked into ordering the upper quarter of the duck (RM30++). The manager said that there would be a wait for the lower quarter. I actually wanted the lower quarter where the thigh is. That’s priced at RM50++. Half a duck costs RM78++. Never order the upper quarter. There is not much meat there and most of the meat is there is dry and too chewy. I did not enjoy it at all.

Some parts which had a bit more meat suggested what the lower quarter would have tasted like. It was moist and tender and well seasoned. Really quite delightful. If you ever get propositioned to take the upper quarter, either hold your ground or take half a duck. It’s worth it. You can “tapau” the upper half and make something else out of it.
The deep fried egg plant with chicken floss turned out to be an enjoyable dish. A sweet and savoury dish all in one with a moist and soft inner core of egg plant. At RM22.80++, a worthy order.

But the best dish is the one bamboo noodle or wantan mee (RM8.80++). I have missed having good HK style wantan mee and this one did the name justice. Wantan Mee if not done right will continue being cooked in the soup but the cooks here had done it right. They must have dipped it in cold water to prevent it from cooking too quickly and turning mushy before it was served. When I ate it was still firm to the bite. An al dente wantan mee. The best I have had in KL in a very long time. It was so good, I almost wanted to order a second bowl.
Needless to say, this lunch at The Travelling Duck Pavilion Bukit Jalil was saved by the wantan mee.
