Lunch at Aunty Sam Kitchen presented a mix of culinary experiences, showcasing both hits and near-misses. We started with a yam basket with kung po chicken, lala meehoon, braised eggplant with mui heong salted fish and minced pork, and a much-anticipated lotus root soup.
The lotus root soup (RM15.20) arrived first, and with the proprietor’s claim of it being boiled for 10 hours, I had high hopes for a broth that would be full-bodied. Unfortunately, it was somewhat underwhelming, leaning more towards blandness than the deep flavour I was expecting. Given the extensive cooking time, I expected a more concentrated and intense taste.
Soup is on right.

Next was the lala meehoon (RM28), which thankfully delivered where the soup didn’t. The vermicelli was well-seasoned and retained a satisfying, firm texture, making each bite enjoyable. The gravy soaked into the noodles perfectly, bringing out the natural sweetness of the lala (clams). However, a minor issue was that many of the lala had fallen out of their shells and settled at the bottom of the plate, making it a bit of a scavenger hunt to enjoy the seafood element of the dish.

The yam basket with kung po chicken (RM28.80) was my highlight of the meal. The basket itself was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, providing a delightful contrast in textures. The kung po chicken filling was flavourful, with the right balance of sweet, savoury, and spicy notes that complemented the earthy taste of the yam. It was a dish I thoroughly enjoyed.

The braised eggplant with mui heong salted fish and minced pork (RM16) was another decent offering. While the dish was flavourful, the distinctive taste of mui heong salted fish was somewhat subdued, leaving the dish lacking the punch I was hoping for. It wasn’t a bad dish though.

All in plus drinks, our meal came up to RM116 for 3 pax.
