Pavilion Bukit Jalil turns out to be a good spot to try a variety of food, including authentic Chinese Muslim food from the northern and western regions of China. Maybe it's because there are Chinese expats who live and work in the surrounding area. One weekend, I went with a small group to try out the food at Mee Hiris China Muslim, a chain of almost 30 outlets with Halal certification.
I must apologize about the pictures because I got too busy talking and eating before I remembered to snap some pictures. My order of fried lamb noodles was rather authentic - the strong, almost overwhelming flavor of fat from the lamb combined with the chilli oil and springy, al dente noodles to bring me back to my travels in that region of China. It was a heavy, hearty dish that left me half-sedated for the rest of that evening. Good stuff.
The lamb dumplings were another standout dish. The thick dumpling skin had a nice chewy texture while the meat inside was tender, with a faint hint of cumin and coriander seeds. It was good enough to eat on its own without dipping it in the rather mild chilli oil. Again, my hungry companions had started diving into the dish before I remembered to fire up my camera app.
The mee hiris or knife-cut noodles, a specialty from Shanxi province in northern China, were thick and springy while the pulled noodles or la mian (typical of Lanzhou in western China) were also good. They weren't as spicy as from the nearby Kung Fu Cow but still good nonetheless.
Mee Hiris China Muslim was full on that weekend, the clientele being a combination of locals and Chinese expats and tourists, so they were doing a good job of balancing original flavors and meeting customer demand. Good on them and yes, I would definitely go back there for the lamb dumplings again.
