This has been a regular ; “replacing “ the Esquire Kitchen memories from our childhood. IYKYK. As Chiefeater VK mentioned, it was a luxury to eat those mantous back in the 80s and 90s. As far as I can recall Fong Lye has been around since 2008- and we’ve been frequenting this place ever since. I do love Taiwanese food and I feel Fong Lye Gardens always mixes it up, keeping their menu fresh.
You’ve got all your Taiwanese 🇹🇼 supremes – esp night market regulars, like oyster 🦪 mee sua, beef brisket, intestines and all. But what got me (this time) was the pork intestines complete with pig blood cubes in a spicy tangy sauce made of doubanjiang, leek, onions 🧅 I’m guessing. The set comes with a bowl of rice 🍚 with braised pork mince topping – which was good enough on its own really. And an old cucumber soup side, which was superb, also in its own!
The flavours and this dish reminded me of Hutaoli (https://chiefeater.com/chiefeaters/hutaoli-serves-sichuan-delights/) in New York City, with fond memories. This visit was a 7.5/10 experience. But then again Fong Lye never dipped below 7/10
