Chiefeater Celeste Tan ponders on the question if Singapore is ready for the Hokkaido Soup Curry at Soup Curry by Ki-setsu

Ground Eatery Puchong has been one of my favourite places to eat in Puchong for quite some time. The food is good, the prices are reasonable, and they have always been rather generous with their portions.
I was back for dinner and ordered the Japanese Hamburg Rice with Soft Omelette.

It is a substantial-looking dish. A thick pork hamburg sits on top of a soft omelette that covers the rice underneath, with roasted potato wedges on the side. The hamburg had a nicely browned exterior while remaining juicy inside, and the omelette added a soft, creamy contrast to the meat.

There was one thing I remembered from eating it previously, though: the sauce.
The last time I had this dish, I felt there was too much sauce and it overpowered the hamburg. So this time, I asked Ground Eatery to serve it separately.
That small change made the dish much better for me.

Instead of having the hamburg covered in sauce from the beginning, I could add a little at a time. I could taste the savouriness of the pork first, then introduce as much sauce as I wanted with each mouthful. The omelette and rice also remained more distinct rather than everything taking on the flavour of the sauce.
Sometimes enjoying a familiar dish more isn’t about changing the cooking. It is simply knowing how you like to eat it.
Jen went one step further with her Pork Burger with Caramelised Onion. She ordered the burger without the bun. You can call that a custom job. 😜

What arrived were the pork patties topped with cheese and dark caramelised onions, accompanied by fries, onion rings and salad. Looking at the portion, removing the bun certainly didn’t leave her short of food.

And that generosity is part of why I continue to like Ground Eatery. You don’t come away feeling that the kitchen has been overly precious with the portions, while the prices remain very reasonable.
Japanese Hamburg Rice with Soft Omelette – RM18.00
Pork Burger with Caramelised Onion – RM23.00
Triple Sour Juice – RM8.80
Warm Water – RM0.80
Service charge (10%) – RM5.06
Total for two: RM55.65
MVX Score: 8.3/10
M – Meal
The pork hamburg was juicy and savoury, while the soft omelette worked well with both the meat and rice. Having the sauce served separately made a considerable difference for me because I could control how much went into each mouthful.
Score: 8.2/10
V – Value
This remains one of Ground Eatery’s strengths. RM18 for the Hamburg Rice is very reasonable considering the size of the dish, and our entire dinner for two came to RM55.65 including drinks and service charge.
Score: 8.7/10
X – X-Factor
Ground Eatery combines good food, sensible pricing and portions that are consistently generous. It is the combination rather than any single elaborate dish that keeps me returning.
Score: 8.0/10
