Passing by an old Chinese coffee shop, Hap Shing Kedai Kopi, in Sandakan, I found a hot soup called Coto Makassar, which is very similar to the mutton soup in West Malaysia. I asked and found out that it is a traditional Indonesian soup that originated from Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is a variation of the traditional Soto beef and offal stew, and the soup is seasoned with peanuts and spices. I ordered one and ate it the way the West Malaysian mutton soup is, with bread, and it tastes even better after squeezing in sour jelly.
