Malay, Daging Salai, Pork-Free
Looking for food around Kota Damansara, we discovered Kampung-Lah which has a strong following among its fans. With a reputation for serving up authentic Malay cuisine from Negeri Sembilan and Johor, it’s no wonder they’ve garnered a loyal following over the years. While waiting for our meal, they gave us a complimentary plate of rojak.

The Ulam

One dish that truly stole the show was the Masak Lemak Daging Salai. Priced at RM45++, this hearty dish is a celebration of bold flavours and rich textures. The creamy “lemak” sauce, infused with aromatic spices, enveloped tender pieces of smoked beef. Each bite was a symphony of savoury and spicy notes, though the spice level was definitely not for the faint of heart. While most of the meat was perfectly cooked, there was a slight inconsistency with one piece being a tad chewy. Nonetheless, the overall experience was delightful and left me craving more.

Another standout was the Ikan Asam Pedas, priced at RM49++. This classic Malay dish featured a perfectly cooked siakap bathed in a tangy and aromatic gravy. The balance of sourness and spiciness was spot-on, creating a harmonious flavour profile that tantalized the taste buds. Each spoonful offered a burst of refreshing acidity, making it a refreshing and satisfying choice.

However, the dish that truly stole my heart was the Terung Berlado, priced at RM18++. Despite its simplicity, this humble eggplant dish packed a punch in terms of flavour. The eggplant was cooked to perfection, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture that complemented the bold and spicy “berlado” sambal. Each bite was a delightful explosion of flavours, leaving me wanting more.

The bill came up to slightly over RM200++ for the 4 of us. I can understand why some people have complained about the price but I think it’s fair value for the quality that we were served. If you’re looking for a taste of traditional Negeri Sembilan styled cuisine that’s sure to satisfy your cravings, look no further than Kampung-Lah.
