Sarawak Laksa, Kolo Mee, Pork-Free
Jen and I recently met up with an old friend at Kaya & Toast in Bangsar Baru, and it proved to be a pleasant place for conversation. The fact that it wasn't crowded and had air-conditioning made it conducive for catching up.
We started with kaya toast, which was quite enjoyable. The toast had a nice crispiness to it, and the kaya spread had a pleasing consistency—not too watery or lumpy. Importantly, it struck a good balance in sweetness.
For lunch, I decided to try the Sarawak Laksa (RM16). The broth was notably thick, although the taste leaned towards the milder side. You can actually see that the broth doesn't look spicy at all from the picture above. Unfortunately, the vermicelli had soaked up the broth, resulting in a somewhat mushy texture. On the positive side, the chicken and prawns in the laksa were quite good.
Jen also ordered Kolo Mee (RM12), which had a similar issue with mushy noodles. Additionally, the minced chicken meat could have benefited from more seasoning to enhance the overall flavour. It looked like Kaya & Toast Bangsar perhaps had a preference to prepare their noodles with a softer texture.
