A return visit to Michele’s Kitchen proved to be a rewarding experience, particularly after setting aside prior expectations of Hakka cuisine. This time, the focus was solely on the food itself, and with Chiefeater YW Looi’s recommendation, the meal turned out to be a satisfying affair. The meal consisted of a fish curry, fried pork, and a stir-fried vegetable dish. A simple yet well-rounded selection.
Fish Curry – The Undisputed Star
The fish curry was superb, with a deeply savoury and well-balanced gravy that coated the fish beautifully. The flavours were rich, layered, and intensely satisfying, offering just the right balance of spices, tanginess, and umami. Every spoonful of curry packed a robust depth, making it easily the highlight of the meal.
Fried Pork – A Decent Supporting Act
The fried pork was enjoyable, though it did not quite steal the show. While crispy on the outside and tender within, it lacked an element that would make it particularly memorable. That said, it still provided a good complement to the curry.
Stir-Fried Vegetables – A Light, Complementary Addition
The stir-fried vegetable dish helped to balance out the richness of the meal, offering a fresh, slightly crunchy counterpoint to the heavier dishes.
Without the expectation of Hakka-style cuisine, this visit to Michele’s Kitchen proved to be much more enjoyable. Sometimes I just need to re-set my lenses and view things with a different perspective.
