The Athenian winter was very kind to us. Nissos Seafood Tavern is located in Paleo Faliro and specifically in Marina Floisvou. The chef prepares fresh seafood delicacies, at unbeatable prices, overlooking the endless blue yonder!
Maybe it’s the weather – imagine 17c summer like the crisp air blowing at your face under the Athenian sun – certainly works up an appetite. The olive oils they use here are just wonderful. Next level. The seafood dishes are plain grilled in olive oil, salt and pepper with ample drizzles of lemon.
The server invited me back into the kitchen to have a look at their catch of the day. They had sea bass, grouper, breaks and other crustaceans and squids all caught from the Aegean. And the Aegean was staring straight at us as we sipped wine at the veranda.
We chose the white grouper 1.1kg and the squid – the mollusk was a huge specimen at almost 1kg! I was a little worried it would come up rubbery once grilled. Turns out I had nothing to worry about, it was perfectly grilled and lightly charred in all the right places. Definitely a 7.5/10.

The lemon olive oil sauce drizzle was perfection. I could lap up the sauce alone. The fish was a behemoth, and was deboned right before our very eyes. It was also perfection, so tender and flaky and succulent. The white flesh fell off the bone, literally. This was 8/10 effortlessly. Probably the best grilled fish I’ve had in a while. Actually , the last time I recall having such good fish was in Barcelona (it was a salt baked fish), but that was at least a decade ago.

Next the freshly caught langostines. They call it crayfish here in Greece.

Regardless, the chef used 500g – about 3-4 sizeable crustaceans into a cherry tomato pasta. Wonderful also at 7.5/10.

Paired with the delectable Greek whites (wine), the seafood here is impeccable. It’s hard to beat how fresh and simple they keep their fish. When you’re in Athens, you’re just 10-15 mins away to the ocean; more reason to get yourself a seafood meal at one of their many marinas in this ancient city at the cradle of civilisation.
