Restaurant Aik Yuen Hokkien Mee.
After work in the Sentul area, I was looking for good food. I asked a local foodie who recommended several eateries for me to choose from. My choice was Restaurant Aik Yuen which is located behind Tawakkal Hospital, with a 40-year-old Hokkien fried noodle specialty. Their signature Hokkien Mee, which looked like "black gold" when cooked, but tasted delicious. The owner was generous, providing a large bowl of sambal chili sauce for me to add. If you're stuck in traffic in the city, foodies can turn in here to eat before heading home.
The eatery only operates at night from 6 pm to 1 am, and is closed on Mondays.
Do not confuse the Hokkien Mee in the Klang Valley with the ones in Penang. While both use yellow noodles and rice vermicelli, that is where the similarities end. KL Hokkien Mee is stir-fried in a dark soy sauce-based gravy with pork, prawns and vegetables. The dish is garnished with crispy fried shallots and served with sambal chili paste on the side. For the real deal, it must have pork lard croutons too. Hawker centers and Chinese restaurants in Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding areas commonly offer this dish, which has a distinct smoky flavor.
