Curry Mee, Street Food, Non-Halal
On a working trip to Kepong recently, decided to dropped by Penang Corner for lunch.
We had Penang white curry, popiah, five-spice lobak and fruit rojak. The white curry looked pale and uninviting when served, but upon adding several scoops of the dark brownish sambal, it magically transformed into a beautiful reddish hue with a floating reddish chilli, resulting in a delightfully and tantalizing not too thick and slightly sweetish curry broth. It came with an assortment of condiments, such as taufu pok, coagulated pig blood cubes, small fresh prawns, cuttle fish strips and meat balls. Cockles were available, but having lived more than 6 decades of my life, I try to avoid it.
The Penang-style popiah was filled with finely grated turnips, unlike some others with coarsely cut turnips. It also had bits of crispy bits of prawn crackers.
The fried lobak is quite thin, but flavourful, crispy on the outside, chunky meaty inside and with a distinct 5-spice powder taste.
Fruit rojak with its dark colour sauce, a sprinkle of peanut bits on the top and a few wafer thin pieces of crispy prawn cracker on the side was quite nice. However, I would have prefer a thicker and more robust sauce.
Restoran Penang Corner is just beside a busy main road. Parking is available opposite the restaurant. It is non air-cond, only with swirling ceiling fan and wall fan. Service is prompt, price is slightly above average.
