Chicken Chop, Non-Halal
It was a straightforward order at Syarikat Hor Kee SS3: the Black Pepper Chicken Chop (RM18.90), a dish that was a staple for me. This version arrived with a generous portion of grilled chicken, coated in a thick, glossy black pepper sauce. The meat itself was nicely cooked — juicy, tender, and with just enough char from the grill to give it flavour. Where it fell slightly short for me was the sauce. While it had the familiar pepper aroma, I would have preferred a stronger kick of heat and a deeper savoury edge. It leaned more sweet than sharp, which made it feel a bit muted.

The sides were textbook: a handful of fries, a slice of garlic toast, and a small cup of coleslaw. Functional accompaniments — not bad, not remarkable — just enough to complete the plate. I found myself thinking I’d probably enjoy this dish more if it were the fried version instead. There’s something about the crunch of a breaded chop that gives more contrast and satisfaction.

Surprisingly though, the kopi (RM4.20) here turned out to be quite enjoyable. It had a smooth body. I could see myself stopping by again for a decent cup of kopi.
