Nasi Lemak
Sometimes it isn’t what a dish contains that determines whether it succeeds. It’s what gets left out. That was exactly the case with the Thong Kee Kopitiam Puchong Roast Pork Nasi Lemak.
Somewhere between the kitchen and my front door, the sambal never made it into the container. Without it, what should have been nasi lemak became little more than fragrant coconut rice served with roast pork, a fried egg, peanuts and ikan bilis.

That was a pity because the fundamentals were actually very good.
The coconut rice was wonderfully fragrant without becoming overly rich. Even before taking the first bite, the aroma reminded me of what a good nasi lemak should be. The grains were fluffy, well separated and enjoyable enough to eat on their own.

The roast pork was equally satisfying. The meat remained moist despite the delivery journey, while the crackling retained enough crispness to provide a satisfying crunch. I also appreciated that it wasn’t overly salty, allowing the natural flavour of the pork to come through instead of relying on seasoning.

The fried egg arrived with a beautifully runny yolk, while the peanuts and ikan bilis added texture and crunch to every mouthful.
Unfortunately, nasi lemak is one of those dishes where every component depends on the others. The rice, sambal, egg, peanuts and ikan bilis aren’t simply individual ingredients sitting on the same plate—they’re designed to complement one another. Remove the sambal, and the entire balance changes.
I enjoyed the fragrant rice.
I enjoyed the roast pork.
But I never really got to enjoy the nasi lemak.
Had the sambal been included, I genuinely believe this dish would have earned a much higher score.
Roast Pork Nasi Lemak — RM18.97
Total Paid — RM18.97
Average per pax — RM18.97
MVX Score: 7.5/10
M – Meal Value
The coconut rice was fragrant, the roast pork was moist with pleasantly crisp crackling, and the overall quality of the ingredients was good. However, omitting the sambal meant the dish was incomplete. Regardless of how well the individual components performed, you simply can’t experience nasi lemak properly without one of its defining elements.
Score: 7.5/10
V – Vroomness of Delivery
The food travelled exceptionally well. The roast pork retained a surprising amount of crispness, the fried egg arrived intact with a runny yolk, and the rice remained warm and fluffy. Unfortunately, the delivery experience was undermined by the missing sambal.
Score: 8.4/10
X – X-Factor
Thong Kee’s fragrant coconut rice paired with roast pork has the potential to be an excellent combination. Unfortunately, because the sambal was missing, I never got to experience the dish as it was intended. That unanswered question ultimately became the biggest takeaway from the meal.
Score: 6.8/10
