Tsui Wah Restaurant Central. Love it or hate it - HK has localised many Western and Southeast Asian flavours, made their own.
Satay sauce is one such delicacy, served in local diners or char chaan tengs. Tsui Wah - the OG of HK local diners (at least to Southeast Asian taste buds) - has gone upmarket in Central. Just a few years back they were in the slummier part of Wellington Street.
The menu has been decidedly been priced for Westerners. I opted for the few remaining local dishes. Instant noodles with ham, fried eggs - fine.
Satay sauce beef slices on instant noodles with that, still a no for me. It’s sweet, much like the Malaysian version, but lacks the depth / peanutty goodness to carry through. What you get (to me) is a sugary, diluted satay-ish concoction / hot water.
The beef slices were good though, tender. I’d rate this 5.5/10. Next round let me re-review the more authentic (not on HK island) satay eateries I’ve had over the decades.
